Bookworms. I don't even like the word. Still, it applies to me - I have been one as far back as I can remember and I cannot imagine life otherwise. The truth is that very few things match the pleasure of a good book and the joys, the knowledge it gives you. Don't tell me you don't have time to read. Don't tell me book lovers hide in books and forget to live; comfortable with second-hand experiences. Book lovers live a thousand lives, they write a thousand books, they travel in time and space. Book lovers are scary. They know so much, they have seen the depths of human souls, they have seen the light and touched the darkness, they have an understanding of things other people will never have.

The storm
Based on the short story The storm by Louise Cooper, the students created a timeline of the story using Dipity. It can also be viewed as a flipbook.
Using Cube creator the students created a story cube that can be later used with other groups or classes for a different task: writing a story with the propmts given here.

Talking turkeys
The students read the poem Talking turkeys by Benjamin Zephaniah and decided to do the following:
- write a postcard to all the people in the world as if they were a turkey complaining about their situation. They used the Postcard creator;
- illustrate the poem in a PowerPoint presentation adding their voices reading the poem.
Here's the postcard. / Aqui está o postal.

The open window
Although the students' work was based on the short story The open Window by Saki, the students never actually read the story. They were given a wordclod made from the original text and they were told to create their own story using as many of the words from the wordcloud as possible.

The strap box flyer
Based on the short story The strap box flyer by Paul Jennings the student used two newpaper templates where he created articles based on what he had read. The second page was used for articles about other subjects, all of them created by the student Eduardo Silva.

The storyteller
Based on the short story The storyteller by Saki the students created a flipbook using Flipsnack where they simplified the text and illustrated it using images from Storybird. They also created a poem in Glogster using words and expressions from the original story. Using Wordle the students created a wordcloud with the most important words in the story.
Watch a video of the flipbook. (The next step will be adding voice to the video.)
Glog.

The need to motivate students to read is a cross-curricular imperative and a prerequisite for the development of different skills of analysis, synthesis and processing of the material read.
The use of texts that are appropriate to the age of the students, in conjunction with the use of digital tools makes it possible for students to make texts their own, to transform and present the text in different ways, to build parallel texts or create graphical representations of the texts. This will be the path for a more motivating and full reading experience. This type of activity also allows the foreign language teacher to watch vocabulary development, the evolution in terms of pronunciation and the improvement of students'communication skills.
Through some examples already tested with students I intend to show how one can transform the Extensive Reading Activity or any other reading activity into a stimulating challenge.
do material lido.
desafiadora.

What teachers make
A very nice poem by Taylor Mali
You want to know what I make?
I make kids wonder,
I make them question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them write, write, write.
And then I make them read.
I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful
over and over and over again until they will never misspell
either one of those words again.
I make them show all their work in math.
And hide it on their final drafts in English.
I make them understand that if you got this (brains)
then you follow this (heart) and if someone ever tries to judge you
by what you make, you give them this (the finger).
I make them question.
I make them criticize.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them write, write, write.
And then I make them read.
I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, definitely

either one of those words again.
I make them show all their work in math.
And hide it on their final drafts in English.
I make them understand that if you got this (brains)
then you follow this (heart) and if someone ever tries to judge you
by what you make, you give them this (the finger).
Let me break it down for you, so you know what I say is true:
I make a goddam difference! What about you?
Crying a river
Cassius:
"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings."
Julius Caesar (I, ii, 140-141)"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings."
Nice quotation from (probably) my favourite Shakespeare's play. Also the inspiration for the title of the book I've just finished. Maybe some will call it a tear-jerker, but I don't care - I liked it and I cried. Read a bit more on it. I am still a bit beyond words...

Bookspine poetry
Bookspine poetry is an appealing and challenging activity that makes kids go to the library, handle books, think and experiment so they will find meaning in book titles and combine them into a poem. There is currently a display near our school's library where you can see the work of 8th, 9th and 11th graders. Take a look!
These are just a few examples:

Leer está de moda
Ok, so let's make this a bit multicultural and multilingual. I came across this video a long time ago but it's still one of my favourites. I really hope you enjoy it. Because although I love technology I could never, ever, replace them by ebooks.I love all these book covers smiling at me in my living room. Enjoy!

I don't know how this blog will develop or if it will. I don't know if it will be for students, for friends, only for me. If I will just share images, quotes, texts I like, students' work or if I will share my readings and opinions (silly me, thinking someone might care!). Posts may be in English or in Portuguese - I guess this will be something hybrid, allowing for many developments and interpretations. Such as books!
